(A Sober Broker Reflection on Progress, Gratitude & Growth)

“Maybe you don’t notice your progress because you’re constantly raising the bar higher. … You don’t need to slow down, just remember to look back long enough to realize you’re living in the prayers of your past self.”
That quote landed deep...
I’ve walked paths in sobriety, in business, in faith — always pushing forward. But sometimes the progress is so incremental you forget how far you’ve come.
If you’re reading this, you probably relate.
Let’s talk about honoring the climb and still charging upward.
Ambition Is a Double-Edged Sword
Ambition propels us toward our goals, pushing us to surpass our limits and strive for greatness. However, it can also distract us from appreciating the present and the lessons we learn along the way.
• Each milestone achieved becomes a new starting point, often leading us to set higher goals and chase the next big thing. This relentless pursuit can prevent us from celebrating our achievements and reflecting on our progress.
• Achievements that once seemed like dreams can quickly become normal, leading to complacency. It's important to reconnect with the passion that fueled our ambitions and find joy in our accomplishments to avoid taking them for granted.
• Not feeling fully satisfied doesn't mean stagnation; it indicates growth and adaptation to new challenges. Embracing this evolution allows us to appreciate personal growth rather than focusing only on end results.
In sobriety, as in life, ambition can be motivating yet overwhelming. It's crucial to pause and reflect on our journey to appreciate our transformation. By acknowledging our growth, we cultivate gratitude and fulfillment, allowing ambition to coexist with appreciation for the present.
Zoom Out: See the Bigger Picture
When you’re focused on the next level, you miss the view you’re already standing on.
Pause. Reflect.
• What was your life like before sobriety?
• What pain did you survive?
• What destructive habits have you replaced?
• What quiet goals have you crushed?
This is not about complacency. This is about recharging your inner compass. Gratitude sharpens your perspective and anchors you in your purpose.
Gratitude Fuels Growth
You don’t need to slow down, but you do need to remember.
When gratitude becomes your lens, you begin to see:
• God’s hand in your journey
• The prayers your past self whispered, now answered
• The strength you’d forgotten you carried
In recovery, a grateful heart is a shield. Bitterness, entitlement, and complacency fade away.
Celebrate the Climb — Even While Climbing
You can keep raising the bar — but don’t forget to plant your feet and celebrate the steps you’ve already climbed.
Practices you can start today:
• Keep a wins journal (big or small)
• Share your testimony or your progress with someone
• Pause daily (or weekly) just to reflect and thank God
• Celebrate with community — let people cheer you
By doing this, you don’t lose momentum — you gain conviction.
What True Progress Looks Like
Real progress is not just leveling up. Real progress is:
• Recognizing the mountain behind you
• Believing you were worth the climb
• Knowing you are now stronger, wiser, humbler, more faithful
This is what living in the prayers of your past self looks like.
